Load Management

Balancing training stimulus and recovery

Short Definition

Load management refers to the deliberate planning and adjustment of training volume, intensity, and recovery periods. The goal is a balance between training stimulus and regeneration that challenges the body sufficiently without overloading it in the long run.

In the Dance Context

In dance, workload often fluctuates sharply: quieter rehearsal phases are followed by sudden spikes ahead of premieres, performance runs, or auditions, sometimes with several productions running in parallel. A concept from elite sport suggests that it is not the absolute amount of training but rather a too-rapid increase in load relative to accustomed load that raises injury risk. A study of professional dancers found an association between increased training load and the occurrence of overuse symptoms. Compounding the issue, "dancing through pain" is still regarded in some settings as a mark of professionalism, which further hinders timely adjustment of load. Thoughtful load management therefore takes into account not only rehearsal and performance schedules but also factors such as sleep, nutrition, and individual capacity.

Why This Matters for Prevention

Because sudden load spikes are among the best-documented risk factors for overuse injuries, teaching the fundamentals of load management is an important part of CENIT e.V.'s prevention work. Planning training, rehearsal, and performance phases with foresight, and actively scheduling recovery rather than leaving it to chance, reduces the risk of both acute and chronic overuse damage.
